The Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition, which had been in power for over 60 years, faced its first electoral defeat. This historical moment was not only a political shock but also gave rise to new issues, particularly concerning the Malay community. One prominent issue that emerged was the anxiety surrounding national identity. Social media, especially Twitter, played a crucial role in disseminating sentiments of a renewed Malay nationalism.
